What is Wrist tendonitis?
Wrist tendonitis is also known as DeQuervain’s tendonitis or Mommy wrist. It is a condition in which a patient experiences pain over the wrist joint at the base of the thumb.
It is not exclusively a problem for mothers. It can affect anyone who frequently uses their wrists or engages in improper repetitive wrist movements. Dentists, massage therapists, and homemakers are common groups affected by Mommy’s Hand.
As a result of friction and repetitive tendon gliding, the tendons involved in extension and abduction of the thumb gets constricted in the tunnel and progressively inflamed.
Hence, this condition often arises after an increased in movement in the wrist and thumb. Apart from experiencing pain at the side of the wrist and base of thumb, the affected area might swell and the individual can encounter problem in activities such as pinching, rotating the wrist, twisting and lifting the thumb.

What is Wrist tendonitis TCM Treatment ?
Flower Moon Clinic treat this condition in TCM way by applying acupressure on the affected area and the related acupressure points with the use of TCM medicated oil specially formulated for tendonitis. This helps to promote blood circulation, pain relief and relax affected tendon to speed up recovery. When required, acupuncture can also be carried out to treat this condition.
What do I expect?
Generally, a continuous treatment course of 5 times is advised for wrist tendonitis, and each session is recommended to be carried out 2 to 3 times per week to reduce the pain score.
With approximately two weeks of treatment, most patients experience a reduction in pain levels from 7-9 to 0-3.
After the treatment course, the physician will recommend some physio exercise movements to patients for self-maintenance of wrist tendonitis, as the pain can easily relapse without adequate care and caution taken.
For those who prefer to avoid painkillers, intra-articular injections, solely physical therapy, or even surgical interventions, TCM could be a viable alternative.
